OpenAI-Backed Thrive Is Buying ADT (Your Alarm Is Getting a Brain)
The company that has been guarding front doors since 1874 is getting a new owner. And that owner has OpenAI on speed dial.
On October 29, 2026, Thrive Holdings agreed to buy ADT, the American home security giant, in an all-cash deal worth $15.3 billion once you count the debt. Shareholders get $10 a share, which values the company itself at about $7.6 billion.
That's 45.6% more than ADT's closing price of $6.87 on October 27.
So if you held ADT stock on Tuesday, you had almost 50% more money by Thursday. Most of us check our accounts midweek and find a streaming subscription we forgot to cancel.
Thrive Holdings is the spinout of Thrive Capital, the venture firm run by investor Josh Kushner. The plan is simple: buy solid, older companies, keep them for the long run and fill them with AI. It already owns more than 75 of them.
Its partner and investor is OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, which sends AI models and its own engineers into those companies.
And ADT, according to the official announcement, becomes the base of Thrive's smart home security business.
Your alarm used to beep when the door opened. The next one might ask why you came home at 3 a.m.
Personally, I think this is a clever bet. Building a great chatbot is hard and very expensive. Buying a company that already has the customers, the technicians and the blue sign on the lawn is a shortcut.
In AI, the smartest model wins the headlines, but the company that people already pay every month wins the money.
But careful: neither company has said what AI products are coming. The deal still needs a yes from ADT shareholders and from US antitrust regulators, and it's expected to close in the first quarter of 2027. ADT can even look for a better offer until November 28.
Thrive says ADT's privacy and data policies will stay exactly as they are. Good, because this is a camera in your living room, not a playlist. If AI digging through your stuff already makes you nervous, read how Chrome autofill now reads your Gmail.
ADT spent 150 years keeping strangers out of your house. Now it's about to invite an AI in.
